Berry Oat Lactation Smoothie recipe card

Lactation Smoothie

This is my go-to lactation smoothie. Oats, flaxseed, and brewer’s yeast are the ingredients most associated with milk supply, and blending them is far easier than baking them at 5am.

Berry Oat Lactation Smoothie

  • 1 cup oat milk
  • ½ cup Greek yogurt
  • ½ banana
  • ½ cup frozen berries
  • ¼ cup rolled oats
  • 1 tablespoon flaxseed
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1 tablespoon almond butter
  • A handful of spinach (optional)
  • Ice as desired

Blend until smooth.

Notes

  • Add brewer’s yeast — one to two teaspoons — if you want the traditional lactation ingredient. It is bitter, so start small.
  • Soak the oats in the oat milk for ten minutes first if your blender struggles.
  • Chia seeds thicken as they sit. Drink it fairly soon, or expect pudding.
  • Make freezer packs with the banana, berries, oats, and seeds portioned out. Tip one in, add liquid, blend.

An honest word about ‘lactation’ foods

Oats, flax, and brewer’s yeast have a long traditional association with milk supply, and a lot of parents feel they help. The clinical evidence is thin. What reliably drives supply is frequent, effective milk removal — a good latch, a well-fitting flange, and enough sessions in the day.

So enjoy the smoothie. It is nutritious, it is easy, and eating properly matters when you are producing milk. Just do not let it replace looking at the mechanics if your supply is genuinely a concern.

If supply is worrying you, the answer is usually in the mechanics rather than the pantry.
